Economic Profile Launch — SHOWcasing the Territory
16 June 2021
The Territory’s iconic shows are thrilled to be part of the NT’s tourism boom. With the unforeseen travel restrictions and increase of Australians visiting the Territory the NT Show Council predicts record numbers to our seven agriculture shows this year.
The NT Show Council is the peak body for the Territory’s Agricultural Show Societies. They support the seven iconic Territory shows, Royal Darwin, Alice Springs, Katherine, Freds Pass, Tennant Creek, Adelaide River and Borroloola. With support from the Northern Territory Government, the NT Show Council is proud to release the Economic Profile highlighting the value of its shows.
The show circuit runs for four months, but each show takes 12 months to plan. This Economic Profile highlights that they attract over 110,00 people across the region. Over eight hundred stalls and exhibitors selling and promoting Territory goods and services have an opportunity to engage with locals and tourists. It’s a mecca for families, couples and teenagers, with the events playing an essential part in highlighting the regional agriculture and local industries.
Chair Rosemary Gibbins said, “We are so excited for this year, travel restrictions have revived local interest, and this is exactly what agricultural shows represent.”
Recent trends have indicated people are staying close to home with an interest in outdoor activities.
The agricultural shows invest an annual $47 million to the Territory’s economy which provide over 340 jobs as an indirect and direct outcome
“It’s great to have the shows back representing their worth across the Territory”said Ms Gibbins.
“We are hoping to attract those who have never visited their local show and inspire some Territorians to venture a little further and visit some of our typically smaller regional shows.”
“Additionally, the committees have worked extremely hard to invest in attractions to entice interstate visitors and share our regions stories and industries” she continues.
Quote from Royal Darwin Show CEO Cherry:
“This publication has been a long time in coming and it is very satisfying to see it come to fruition. It highlights the importance of the agricultural shows to the economy and social fabric of the Northern Territory. The Darwin Show celebrates 70 years this July once again proudly showcasing the diversity of the Top End commercially, socially and culturally to locals and visitors alike.”
All shows link with their local communities including community organisations, schools and businesses. They are an opportunity to showcase everything about that particular region.
